CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
The next morning, at seven-thirty a.m., Katie climbed out of the car and walked up to the RCMP police department, with Leblanc close behind her. She felt refreshed and invigorated after a good nightâs sleep that sheâd never expected to have. She was ready to continue with the interrogation. Even though Sweeney was denying all the way down the line, she felt confident of breaking through his defenses this morning. Especially after a big cup of coffee and an excellent hotel breakfast.
Leblanc, too, looked clear eyed, and cut a stylish figure in his fresh, clean clothes. He was almost unrecognizable this morning, with his well-brushed hair, compared to the muddied, grimy man whoâd fought in the wilds of the island last night.
It was a cool, bright morning. The sky was clear. A cold sun was blazing. The wind coming off the sea was brisk, and she found it invigorating.
The lack of clouds made it easier to see the rugged beauty of their surroundings, she thought, taking a look around her at the mountains on the horizon, and the coastline a few hundred yards away in the other direction, before walking in.
âMorning, Katie,â Callum greeted her.
âMorning,â she said.
Now that she was inside the musty warmth of the police department, she felt the seriousness of her job descend again. The time for relief and celebration and admiring the promise of the sunny day was over. Now, Katie was firmly focused on getting what she needed from the arrested criminal who had spent the night under police guard, and who was now awaiting the second round of questioning before the charges against him were officially completed.
âAre we going to use the same tactics today?â Katie murmured to Leblanc. âOr should we go in separately?â
Leblanc frowned. âWe need to change things up. Letâs go in one by one.â
âI agree. Do you want to take the first round?â
âIâll do that,â Leblanc said. Before he headed into the room, he hesitated.
âKatie, I wanted to tell you again how sorry I am. For everything that happened in the past few days. For my decisions. They were wrong.â
Katie felt surprised. It must have taken a lot for Leblanc to say those words. She knew how proudâokay, to be truthful, how stubbornâhe was.
And she was glad heâd put this topic on the table, because it had been eating away at her insides and causing her a flare of worry whenever she thought about it.
âI want to be able to trust you. And for you to trust me,â she said slowly.
A silence fell between them. She could tell he was struggling with what he wanted to say next, and she was patient.
âI know,â he said finally. âAnd I know I let you down.â
âI donât want you to make decisions because youâre worried about letting me down. I would rather you made them after being honest with yourself,â she pointed out.
âYouâre right.â He looked her in the eye. âAnd Iâm trying to be honest now. With myself, and with you. I am sorry.
