Chapter 10

Back at Deron’s apartment, Jay stared at the login screen. He’d already tried all the passwords he’d tried on Deron’s tablet, plus a few others.

“Did I have any nicknames for you?”

Deron had been wandering around the living room, granting him privacy and space to work at the table in the dining nook, but he stopped wandering now and came to look over his shoulder at the lock screen.

“I suppose we can’t expect your memory to flood back just because you know it’s out there.”

“Things surface, but not when I ask for them.” He was grateful the recordings had stopped playing, though it wasn’t entirely a comfort. Yesterday he’d known lies; today he knew nothing. More than anything, he wished he could remember his parents. He pushed the useless laptop away from him. “Any idea where I could find a photo of my parents?”

Deron clapped his hands together. “That, I might be able help with. Come here.” He opened a closet, the bottom of which housed a mess of sporting equipment. The shelves were more tidily lined with books and DVDs, and a cupboard at the top held a few cardboard boxes.

“Your life,” Deron said, displaying it to him with a wave worthy of a spokesmodel. He grabbed a picture frame from one of the shelves and held it out. Jay took it with hesitant, hopeful fingers.

Those were them—his parents—with him safe between them, one arm around his mother and one around his father. The photo had been taken at a graduation, based on the cap and gown he had on. He looked to be in his early twenties, his hair a lot longer than it was now and his brow unlined, a huge grin splitting his face, obviously pleased with himself.

His mother wore a floral print dress and an expression of pride, his father a dark suit and a goofy grin that matched Jay’s own. His father was a joker, he remembered, the king of dad jokes, a constant embarrassment in Jay’s teen years, an unwavering support always. His mother encouraged his father, actually thought he was funny.

He couldn’t help smiling at the three of them, alike in their questionable sense of humor with their arms wrapped around each other on a bright summer day on a stretch of green lawn. They’d loved him. They’d known he was gay and had supported him in it. He couldn’t remember coming out to them, but he could feel the warmth of their approval.

“And check this out.” Deron slid a photo album into his arms. Not him—photos older than that. “Wish I could tell you what you’re looking at, but we never went through these together.”

“I think this must be my mother’s album.” Her as a girl, her as a teen. As he continued flipping pages, the girl aged into someone he recognized. “There, that’s my dad with her.” A photo of the two of them, wine glasses in hand, dressed for a party. “Oh.” He
