Chapter 10
Back at Deronâs apartment, Jay stared at the login screen. Heâd already tried all the passwords heâd tried on Deronâs tablet, plus a few others.
âDid I have any nicknames for you?â
Deron had been wandering around the living room, granting him privacy and space to work at the table in the dining nook, but he stopped wandering now and came to look over his shoulder at the lock screen.
âI suppose we canât expect your memory to flood back just because you know itâs out there.â
âThings surface, but not when I ask for them.â He was grateful the recordings had stopped playing, though it wasnât entirely a comfort. Yesterday heâd known lies; today he knew nothing. More than anything, he wished he could remember his parents. He pushed the useless laptop away from him. âAny idea where I could find a photo of my parents?â
Deron clapped his hands together. âThat, I might be able help with. Come here.â He opened a closet, the bottom of which housed a mess of sporting equipment. The shelves were more tidily lined with books and DVDs, and a cupboard at the top held a few cardboard boxes.
âYour life,â Deron said, displaying it to him with a wave worthy of a spokesmodel. He grabbed a picture frame from one of the shelves and held it out. Jay took it with hesitant, hopeful fingers.
Those were themâhis parentsâwith him safe between them, one arm around his mother and one around his father. The photo had been taken at a graduation, based on the cap and gown he had on. College maybe, or a graduate degree. He looked to be in his early twenties, his hair a lot longer than it was now and his brow unlined, a huge grin splitting his face, obviously pleased with himself.
His mother wore a floral print dress and an expression of pride, his father a dark suit and a goofy grin that matched Jayâs own. His father was a joker, he remembered, the king of dad jokes, a constant embarrassment in Jayâs teen years, an unwavering support always. His mother encouraged his father, actually thought he was funny.
He couldnât help smiling at the three of them, alike in their questionable sense of humor with their arms wrapped around each other on a bright summer day on a stretch of green lawn. Theyâd loved him. Theyâd known he was gay and had supported him in it. He couldnât remember coming out to them, but he could feel the warmth of their approval.
âAnd check this out.â Deron slid a photo album into his arms. Not himâphotos older than that. âWish I could tell you what youâre looking at, but we never went through these together.â
âI think this must be my motherâs album.â Her as a girl, her as a teen. As he continued flipping pages, the girl aged into someone he recognized. âThere, thatâs my dad with her.â A photo of the two of them, wine glasses in hand, dressed for a party. âOh.â He
