Chapter 9

Tate: Every time I wear these damn Marigold gloves to do the washing up, I get a tingly feeling down below. Maybe we could use them in the—

Clay: Tate, don’t even go there.

Tate didn’t like the fact Aurelio seemed to dismiss his death threats so easily. In his past life, when he was embedded in the cartel, he’d been one of the guys making the threats and receiving them. Tate knew that fear had a funny way of ignoring itself, often to the person’s detriment. He followed Aurelio and Clay over to a bar in the corner of the room, watching as the crowd parted to let them through. They seemed to hold Aurelio in high regard, and Tate felt a grudging respect for the man. He could see why Clay and Aurelio had been in a relationship.

Clay wouldn’t have involved himself with anyone who hadn’t observed the same principles of decency and compassion that he did. Tate would have taken the slimy mobster out into the alley and beat the shit out of him. He supposed that said volumes about his own nature.

He sat at the bar, nursing a beer, lending half an ear to the casual conversation Clay and Aurelio were having about things Tate wasn’t interested in, but his ears pricked up when he heard a name mentioned.

“Tomas? What was that about him?”

Clay winked at Aurelio. “See? One mention of his protégé and he’s all ears.”

“He is not my protégé,” Tate growled. “He’s a pain in my arse.” He squinted at the two men in suspicion. “So what do you need Tomas for?”

“Relio has a slight problem with some trolls who keep hacking the club website. He’s had to rebuild it three times and change servers.”

“Mother Grundys who don’t like what I do, and the services I provide,” Aurelio scoffed grimly. “Clay kindly offered young Tomas’s services in tracking them down and perhaps returning the favour. I hear he’s some sort of hacking wunderkind.”

Tate felt a swell of pride. “He is,” he acknowledged. “And he’d like nothing better than to throw crap back at people such as the ones you’re talking about. He’s fairly opinionated on things like that.”

More like bloody fanatical, he thought. Tomas didn’t suffer fools gladly. At twenty-five years old, he was fiery and passionate, with his own clear sense of right and wrong. He may be a bitch to manage, but his heart was in the right place.

“What is he working on at the moment?” Clay asked, his head cocked to one side. Tate blew out his cheeks, thinking aloud.

“He was looking into that issue we had with the theft of the goods down at the docks. You remember, where someone had falsified all the bills of lading. Nothing too urgent, though.” He winced. “As for anything else, you know Tomas. He keeps himself occupied.”

Clay snorted with laughter. “That he does. I still remember that poor woman across the road who was mistreating her dog. How many times did her burglar alarm go off?”

Tate grinned.
