Chapter 21

Istared at the wall as a knock sounded, interrupting my grief. I was a mess, with tears staining my red, puffy cheeks. Tizmet rested her head near my bed, sensing my sorrow, but made no move to get closer.

“Come in.”

The revelations I had were mine alone, and no one else needed to know about them.

When the way cracked open, Darrak peered inside, giving me a harsh frown. He entered, quill and parchment in hand, then shut the door in the servant’s face.

“I would say it’s a fine morn, but you look like you’ve had a rough night.” He chose his words with care.

Not trusting myself to speak, I shrugged and squinted at the writing tools, posing my unvoiced question.

“I’m to fill out a report on you and your dragon. I thought I’d get your thoughts before I sent it off to Dragon Lord Ruveel.” He set his things on the table near my bed. Turning to me with a glare, he crossed his arms. “Though, more importantly, I’d like to know where you snuck off to last night.”

I scoffed and ran a hand through my short hair. When Mikhala mentioned he checked in on her, I hadn’t considered he’d do the same for me.

“Here I was thinking Mik would be the one to keep an eye on. Turns out it was you.” He glanced at Tizmet. “You’ve at least gotten closer to her if you can order her to stay like a dog while you go traipsing about.”

“She’s not a dog.”

“I never said she was. I insinuated you treated her as such.” His brow arched in challenge. “To be honest, I don’t have a care in all of Rinmoth where you sneak off to. I do, however, care that if someone else checked in on you, they might note that you defied direct orders to remain in your quarters.”

Sighing, I dropped my gaze, knowing that Darrak wasn’t attacking me. He was looking out for me, and there was no reason to lash out at him. The emptiness inside me resulted from my cry this morning. It had nothing to do with him.

“Don’t let me, or anyone else, catch you out,” he said with a resigned sigh. “Ruveel will not be so forgiving.”

Pulling the lone stool to the small table, he sat and took the quill in his hand. “Now tell me of you and your dragon on this past trip.”
