Marnie stood beside Daniel as he knocked at the door of the Prestons’ suite at the Sydney Four Seasons Hotel, inhaling a few slow breaths in the hope that it might steady her breathing a little. She told herself she shouldn’t be nervous. She was on a roll, after all. She’d called Robert D’Angelo, Louisa’s attorney, a half hour ago, and he’d told her that after the police spoke again to Louisa and Sam, it would only be a formality before all charges were dropped and the case closed. Marnie would get the word out to the proper media outlets later today, hopefully along with the news that Tom and Jenna Preston would be attending the Fairchild Gala.

Now all Marnie had to do was deliver the invitation—engraved, no less—that she’d brought with her. And not leave until the Prestons agreed to come. At this point, she was desperate enough to do just about anything to get them to accept.

She was giving her sweater one last nervous tug when the Prestons’ door was opened by a smiling woman with laughing eyes who immediately made Marnie feel at ease. She’d spent much of last night trawling the Internet to learn everything she could about Jenna Preston and her husband. Marnie knew Jenna was fifty-five years old, had four children and two grandchildren, and she and Thomas had been married for nearly forty years. They called Quest Stables in Woodford County, Kentucky, home, but traveled extensively throughout the world for both business and pleasure. When Marnie looked past Jenna into the hotel room, she saw Thomas Preston, but he had his back to them and his cell phone pressed to his ear, deep in conversation.

Jenna was dressed in a simple but stylish green dress that would have been bland had she not accessorized it with a chunky necklace, bracelet and earrings of oversize, colorful beads. She was smaller than Marnie had expected, no more than her own five-four, and had auburn hair, too. But where Marnie’s hair was an unruly tangle of curls when she didn’t take pains to tame it, Jenna’s hair had soft waves that seemed to caress her face. The older woman was pleased to see Daniel standing there, but obviously puzzled by Marnie’s presence.

“Hey, Daniel,” she greeted him. “Tom and I are almost ready. Come on in.”

“I hope you don’t mind,” he said, “but I brought along a…friend…for lunch.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Marnie wanted to say. Lunch? He wanted her to join them for lunch? That was even worse than being cooped up in a car with him. With other people around, she was going to have to pretend that she and Daniel were actually comfortable together.

Then an even more confusing realization crowded into her brain. Friend? He was introducing her as a friend? To Jenna Preston? That was the way you introduced someone when you were embarking on a new romantic relationship and didn’t know what else to say. Jenna might infer that the two of them were an item.
