It wasn’t until much later that evening that Charlotte dropped onto the couch with a mug of tea and a piece of fruit cake.

After their lunch on the beach, Charlotte had vacuumed the entire house to get rid of the sand which had, inexplicably, found its way into every room, before putting away all Oliver’s jumbo building blocks, and every squeaky dog toy that had found its way under furniture and into crevices she didn’t even know existed. She and Molly had spent the rest of the evening making dough for fresh bread in the morning, picking vegetables from the small patch in the garden, and refilling the bird baths.

“I’m not sure I even have the energy to move,” she said to Pippin and Panda, both stretched out on the rug, each with one eye on her at all times in case she decided to make a trip to the kitchen for a dog treat.

She picked up a book she’d been reading, but her eyelids started to droop before she’d even finished one page. Yawning, she stretched out on the couch, fighting sleep.

“I know what I’ll do. I’ll sort through my wardrobe. I’ve been meaning to do it for ages, and it’ll keep me awake.” She took her tea and cake upstairs, then opened the wardrobe and began sorting her clothes into two piles: keep and donate.

A long cardigan that doubled as a spring coat caused her to pause. Although she rarely wore it now, it was one of the few things she’d brought back with her from Spain, and the thought of donating it tugged at her sentimental heartstrings.

“I’ve been ruthless so far, but I’m keeping this,” she said to Pippin and Panda, who had joined her upstairs, and were watching from their shared dog bed. “I should wear it more often. It’s a lovely cardig…” The word stuck in her throat as she recalled what Molly had said after she’d gifted Mr Rags her sunglasses and scarf.

She made her way to Molly’s room, opening the door as quietly as she could, in case she was already asleep.

“Is that you, Mummy?” Molly turned over to face her and yawned.

“Did I wake you, sweetheart?”

“No. I’m tired, but I can’t sleep. I think I’m overtired.” Molly sat up in bed and rubbed her knuckles against her eyes.

“Well, as you’re awake, I need to ask you something,” Charlotte said, sitting on the side of the bed. “Do you remember what you said earlier about what Mr Rags was wearing?”

Molly nodded. “Of course. He was wearing a shirt, a cardigan, and a jacket.”

“What kind of cardigan? Did you see enough of it to describe it to me?”

“I don’t know about the style of it, because the jacket was over the top, but when I was tying the scarf around Mr Rags’s neck, I saw that it was white with big blue flowers on it.”

A tingle ran all the way up Charlotte’s spine to the back of her neck. “Thank you, darling. That’s brilliant.”

“Mummy?”

“Yes, Molly.
