WEST! WHY HAD SHE GONE West?

Alfred crumpled his attorney’s letter and threw it across the cell. Trial was in a month. One month. That was all the time he had left to talk to Catherine, convince her to marry him, and get her father’s help with his legal battle.

He shook his head; it just wasn’t enough time.

He remembered that her sister Elizabeth lived out West. That must be where she had gone. He frowned, struggling to remember where it was she was... something pretentious, named after her husband. Cobbinstown or something like that. It was in the Wyoming territory somewhere.

The likelihood that a letter would even reach her before he went to trial was slim, but to reach her in time to complete his plan... that was unimaginable.

He slammed his fist into the wall as anger filled him. How dare she run off like that.

Run. The word stuck in his head for a moment.

He straightened, as a new idea formed in his mind. He could escape. Escape and take on a new identity somewhere.

No. He shook his head, he liked who he was. He liked it that the people that had known him growing up were forced to look up to him, and not down on him like they were used to. He wanted that back.

Wait. He nodded absently to himself. He could escape and find Catherine. If he went West to find her, and they married, they could send word back here to start his defense. Certainly, once he beat the embezzling and theft charges, they could explain why he felt the need to escape. He could beat those charges as well.

He sat down at the small table and pulled out a piece of paper. He would have to have some help on this, but the promise of more money would certainly move his worthless attorney.
