Chapter Ten
My sleep is abruptly interrupted by the blaring ring of my phone. My hand blindly flails at the nightstand until I make contact with it. I squint at the screen, which is far too bright for my eyes, confused and alarmed to see the name flashing on the display. It takes another two full rings in my hand before I answer.
âHello?â I ask, trying to shake the grogginess from my voice.
âI'm in jail, Hunter. I need your help,â Isaiah says, his words rushed and panicked.
My heart rate surges hearing Isaiahâs voice in such a panic, and then his words sink in. âWhy are you in jail? Whatâs going on? Are you okay?â I ask in rapid fire succession.
âMy friends and I were attacked at the club, the cops came, and brought all of us down here. I can explain more when you get here. Iâm sorry man. Please donât call my parents. Iâll talk to them after they wake up.â
âThey booked you guys for a fight?â
âIt got a little out of control, and to top that off, I lost my wallet in the melee. I wouldâve paid the club for the damages right there if I couldâve found my wallet, but itâs gone. Iâll explain more once youâre here.â
The stress in his voice is undeniable, and I know it wonât help trying to dig for info knowing that other people are watching and listening to him right now.
If I had any frustration at being woken up at three-thirty in the morning, itâs gone now. That small frustration has been replaced by a bunch of other thoughts and emotions, which I suppress while on the call with Isaiah.
âOkay bud. What jail? Iâm on my way now,â I tell him over the speaker of my cell as I get dressed.
After I receive the information, I calm his nerves by telling him Iâm on my way. I jump in my car and am on 95 South within minutes. Miami can have a lot of traffic but at this hour, there isnât any. I feel confident in pushing well past the top of the speed limit the entire way. I soon pull up to the building ready to find out what in the hell is going on.
I contemplate calling Jasmine during my drive, but know there isnât anything she can do for Isaiah in this moment. What it will do is stress her out, and the last thing I need is to deal with this situation and try to talk her off a ledge that I put her on. Nope, Iâm keeping a lid on all of this until we get Isaiah back home safe and secure.
âSpecial Agent Hunter Sparks,â I say cooly to the intercom at the entrance of the jail. I present my badge to the fish-eye camera next to the button Iâve just pressed.
I thought about trying to get into the jail without the badge, but I know at this time of the morning there will be next to no chance of that happening.
