At the end of September, Pearl Jam finally got a chance to step off the treadmill, the band members, the crew, and Kelly Curtis treating themselves to a working vacation in Hawaii. There, they played a few shows and shot another video with Josh Taftâa grainy, black-and-white postcard for the Ten track âOceans,â featuring the band scampering on the beach, that would be released only in Europe. But mostly, they spent the time communing with nature, taking stock and trying to put the last year in perspective.
Between October and February, when they would begin rehearsals for their second album, they would make a few public appearances together as a band, but for the most part the members of Pearl Jam scattered during this period, seeing to personal relationships theyâd neglected during the past several months and grappling individually with the odd emptiness that, they would learn, always accompanied the end of a lengthy tour. Throughout their career, no matter how rigorous the tour or how anxious they were to get home, they would always dread it just a littleâthe feeling of jumping off a fast-moving train and onto the back of a tortoise; the stifling, dusty panic of being deposited on your doorstep and realizing, suddenly, that you donât know how youâre going to spend your days. But, as they did when they returned home in October 1992, they would usually keep busy enough to burn the blues off quickly.
Jeff took off for Montana, where he would soon buy a parcel of land and build a house. Stone poured his excess energy into a side project, recording an album, Shame, with Brad, a band featuring Luv Co. alumnus Shawn Smith on vocals and drummer Regan Hagar, formerly of Malfunkshun. 10 Dave, whoâd finally begun to equate Seattle with âhome,â set about exploring the cityâs offerings and looking for a permanent residence, something he hadnât previously had a chance to do. A romance also blossomed between Dave and Sheri Fineman around this time. Still living in the basement room at Kelly Curtisâs that had earlier been occupied by Jerry Cantrell and, later, by Eddie, the drummer had turned to Fineman, who was still nannying for the Curtises, as a defacto Seattle tour guide. The more time the two spent together, the closer they became. Before long, they would be sharing an address.
Mike and Eddie decided to accept one of the countless invitations that were pouring in, traveling to New York in mid-October to perform a fiery version of âMasters of Warâ at a Bob Dylan tribute concert at Madison Square Garden. In typical weâre-not-worthy form, Eddie joked to reporters that he and Mike were only there because theyâd âvolunteered as roadies,â either unaware of or unwilling to accept the symbolic torch that was being passed. A Newsday reporter recounting the event on the following day would opine that Pearl Jam was âas important
