2. Fetid (FET-id)

If you want to describe something that smells bad, you could say it’s malodorous, or maybe unaromatic. But if it smells really bad, you may want to stretch all the way to fetid—usually reserved for rotting or putrid stuff.

3. Sordid (SOR-did)

Something that’s sordid is not just physically dirty, it’s likely to be morally or ethically foul as well. In a slightly different meaning, it’s sometimes applied to wretched conditions or surroundings, as in a slum.
