ENEMIES

“What’s the matter?” Zane asked as he helped Anais off his horse.

One of the very reasons she wanted to leave before the festival was to avoid the people from the Zhou kingdom. They were super obnoxious. It was bad enough Princess Mai was here but then there was her brother, Prince Feng. He was an even bigger pervert than Declan was. After the party from Zhou had left Jharyn, nine months later, a few of the maids had babies who looked suspiciously like the Prince. It was disgusting how he had leered at her. There was a time when she feared that her father would betroth her to him. But Roland had his eye on another prize. King Zane.

And see how well that turned out.

She had made a deal to stay until the festival but there was no way she’d be able to avoid Mai and her heinous brother Feng. She would just have to stay out of their way.

“Nothing, Your Highness,” she answered softly.

“My name is…” he stopped and looked over at Wesley. “You can tell me, Anais.”

“It is nothing. I am just tired.”

“Then go rest. You will not be needed for the remainder of the day.”

She nodded. As she was about to go past him he grabbed her by the arm and pulled her against him. He dropped a soft kiss on her lips

Anais wasn’t sure how to feel about this public display. Even though she was sure Wesley would not make an issue of it, she did not feel comfortable having this kind of display with someone who essentially saw her as a convenient bed wench.

She pushed away from him. “Ugh, I should probably go to the kitchen to see if my help is needed. I am sure they will be busy with the banquet I am certain you will have for your guests.”

“That will not be necessary, Anais. Go rest. I insist.”

She opened her mouth to protest but decided not to argue. She was tired and if she stayed in her room, she could at least avoid the Zhou delegation for the day. She needed to be rested in order to face Mai and Feng.

“As you wish, Your Majesty.”

She nodded in Wesley’s direction before going into the castle. On the way to her room, she ran into Marisol on the stairs. The other woman was sitting on one of the steps with her head in her heads, crying.

“Marisol, what is the matter?”

“Your—Anais!” She stood up and hastily wiped away her tears. “I am fine. I am just tired.”

“Please do not insult me by lying. Tell me what the matter is.”

Marisol sniffed. “Princess Mai is here…”

“What happened?”

“I think she recognized me as your personal maid from Jharyn. She demanded that I wait on her while she is here. I told her that I have other duties but she slapped me and said that she is a guest and I will accommodate her or else I will have to answer to the King. I…I just wanted you to know that you probably will not be seeing me around that much.
