Chapter 14 – Menes

March 2014, Seoul

“What happened?” I leaped from the chair and darted to Sen, who came into the rehearsal room carrying an unconscious Hwa in a fireman’s carry.

“Let me.” I helped him lower Hwa onto the sofa and crouched down to run my hand over his face. His hair was damp from sweat, but his skin was clammy and cold.

“I thought he was going to burn down the building.”

I turned to Jin, waiting for him to elaborate. He let out a tired breath and parked himself on the ground near the sofa. The others grabbed folding chairs and sat down while Hosin and JS hovered nearby.

“The electricity went out, and we couldn’t use our light reflectors, so we risked a large fire to kill Geuseundae. We’d already tried the combined light from our cell phone flashlights, but that did nothing. That thing was huge!” Jin spread his arms out wide. “We so need to update our monsterpendium.”

Jin gulped and crossed his arms. “Anyway, Hwa created the fire, and Bin positioned it near the thing. Everything was fine until the fire kept growing, even after Jav told Hwa to stop. We all tried to talk to him, but it was like he couldn’t hear us. I think the fire might have grown to the size of a skyscraper if he hadn’t passed out. He’s probably unconscious because he used too much power.”

I frowned. “Did he say anything at all to you?”

“Um... I think he muttered something about not being worthless?” Bin said in a soft, halting voice as he gazed at Hwa, his forehead creased with concern.

“Was there anyone or anything else around the area?” I asked.

“No. I was continuously scanning. I sensed nothing,” Jav said.

“Do you think someone did something to Hwa?”

At Hosin’s question, I tilted my head. “That’s a possibility.”

“But Hwa has lost control of his fire more than once. All under different circumstances and not all in public. The first time it happened was in here. The only common factor is Hwa himself.” Although Hosin’s face held no expression, his eyes were turbulent.

I didn’t think anyone had noticed Hwa had lost control here for the first time, but Hosin’s sharp gaze had missed nothing.

“He needs rest. Let me put him to bed. I’ll be back to discuss this further.” I lifted Hwa into my arms in a princess carry and took him to the bedroom.

The taste of bitterness coated my mouth as the regret in my heart quickly turned to guilt. I shouldn’t have left him alone, especially after the incident at the performance. I’d thought I was giving him space. What he wanted was not something I could give him. Him being alive was more important to me than anything I wanted. I’d thought, once he cooled down, I could explain and make him understand. He was my mate, the most important person in my life now, but I could not be with him.

I took him straight to the bathroom and turned on the shower faucet.
