CHAPTER 6

The court room felt too hot and stuffy. The walls were lined with windows, but none of them were open and it didn’t feel as though they’d ever been opened before, either. I was taken to a wooden seat, which was behind a large desk at the front of the room. The judge was already sitting in his place, his beady eyes observing me, as I took my own seat in front of him.

There was a guy from the district attorney's office who came and sat with me. He leaned over and whispered some stuff that I didn't really take in. My mind was in too many places.

It took a while for things to get started. I noticed Danny walking into the court room just before the doors was closed so that things could proceed. He sat at the back. I could feel his eyes burning into me, as I kept mine to the front.

Danny had told the truth about what he’d done to Sam. I was shocked when I saw the bruises, which were still splotched all over his face.

The judge listened to the evidence that the police presented to them. The doctor’s medical notes were among the evidence. She’d confirmed that my body had been through a stressful experience, which wasn’t likely to be consensual. I glanced over at Sam when the policeman was reading out the statement. For the first time since this had started he looked nervous and that felt undeniably good.

The judge called Sam to the stand and I felt my breath getting caught in my chest. He sat on the stand and told his side of the story. He mentioned the pictures he had taken and how I’d looked like I was having a good time. The jury seemed to be buying it. I could tell from their knowing nods that they were listening to and relating to his story about how a crazy girl had tried to ruin his life.

When it was time for me to take the stand I could barely see straight. My pulse was racing and my legs were shaking, as I walked across the small space between the table that I was sitting behind and the box, which I would be questioned in. I took my seat and waited for the questions to start.

“You claim that the attack happened after a student party on a Saturday night?” Sam’s lawyer asked me.

“Yes.”

“So, if that is true, why didn’t you go to the doctor until the Monday?”

I could feel the jury’s eyes on me. My cheeks started to burn, as I thought back to how everything had started. “He drugged me and I couldn’t remember what had happened. It was only after a friend of mine told me about some things he’d heard about Sam, that I thought I’d better get myself checked out just to be safe.”

“So, you’re telling me that you don’t remember the attack?”

“I remember him giving me the only drink I had that night and then about fifteen minutes later I couldn’t’ walk in a straight line.
