Deposit Activities

Deposit activities are central to the operations of insured depository institutions (IDIs).1 Indeed, taking deposits is what distinguishes IDIs from other, non-depository financial entities. Deposits, which appear on the liability side of an IDI’s balance sheet, provide a key source of funding for an IDI’s lending and other activities. Establishing deposit relationships with customers can also serve as a gateway to encouraging those customers to obtain other products from the IDI. Because deposits are critical to the functioning of the financial system—and because they are protected by federal deposit insurance—regulators take a particular interest in IDIs’ deposit activities, which is evident in the extensive system of regulations to which deposit activities are subject.
