Stunned passersby stopped and pointed, unable to explain exactly what they were seeing. A concerned American bicyclist even stopped and took off his glasses to stare.

But with Tessie and Sandy looking on, the glow emanating from the figure suddenly got flung backwards. The siblings immediately knew something had gone wrong.

Convincing the small crowd that they were going back in, the two entered the front gate and went to the main door. Mark came running out and met them, still dressed in his sheets, but without the candle.

“I heard something behind me,” he said nervously, staring at the upstairs window. “There was a sound, and I didn’t know what it was. I got out of there fast!”

He didn’t want to tempt fate, he later said, fearful that it could’ve been an actual ghost teaching the three not to fool around with the supernatural. The three later went up to the second story room where Mark was pretending to be a ghost, and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Luckily, the discarded candle didn’t start a fire.

It was years before their parents found out about the incident, which the three kept quiet about until adulthood.
