Chapter Seven
Tempe
I reach for the warm body I fell asleep with, but itâs nowhere to be found. I blink and open my eyes to gaze at the empty bed. I donât recall coming to the bedroom. My last memory is of resting my head on Mercyâs shoulder while the comedy film weâd chosen played in the background. I must have drifted off. Scanning my surroundings, I see my phone on the nightstand and grab it to check the time. Itâs after nine in the morning. Panic shoots through me. Iâm running late to training. I bolt upright, but then I remember. No more training. Not for twelve weeks.
I sigh. What am I going to do with myself until then? MMA is my life. I donât know how else to fill my time. Perhaps I should read some of those books Ashlin recommended about parenthood. Iâm going to be a mother, after all. But honestly, reading isnât my thing. I much prefer podcasts and audiobooks. I slide my legs off the edge of the bed and test them to see if theyâll take my weight. Iâm expecting to be a bit shaky after yesterday, but they seem okay. Standing, I look down at myself. Iâm still wearing yoga pants and a tank top. I need to have a shower and change into something fresh, but food comes first. Baby wants yogurt.
I leave the spare room and peek into Mercyâs bedroom. The curtains are open and the bed is made, but heâs not in it. I linger in the hallway, just out of sight of the living area, to see if I can hear anything. Itâs quiet, so I head through.
âGood morning.â
My gaze snaps to Lucia, whoâs sitting at the dining table behind a laptop. âHi. Has Mercy left?â
She nods. âHe had to go to work, but he said to help yourself to whatever you need. And apparently, Iâm to keep a very close eye on you.â
I laugh. âYouâll be pleased to know Iâm feeling much better today, so I donât think you need to worry. Iâm not completely fine, but the blood pressure medication seems to be helping.â
âGood.â Her eyes lower to my belly. âI want my niece or nephew to be healthy. Do we know which it is?â
âNo. I want the gender to be a surprise.â I head to the kitchenette and search the refrigerator for yogurt, berries, and milk to make a smoothie. I add them to the blender thatâs sitting on the counter and pause. âWhereâs the salt?â
Lucia gestures toward a cupboard tucked into the corner. I grab the saltâwhich Iâve been cravingâand then pause, remembering Iâm not supposed to have too much sodium because itâs bad for blood pressure. I set it aside and start the blender, taking a moment to study Lucia while it churns. I didnât pay a lot of attention to her yesterday. I was in too much pain. But her resemblance to Mercy is obvious. She has the same dark hair, although hers is long and straight, and her eyes are a nearly identical shade of blue.
