Sat., May 4, 11:53 a.m. I was too scared about hospice to ask Avery about the poster this morning. Mom and I are there now. I mean here. At Loving Arms.

Mom keeps squeezing my knee like she knows I’m about to fly apart with fear. I just tried “Come back to your senses,” but it’s not the right tactic for here. This place is too much like the funeral home where we had Aunt Camila’s funeral. Gray carpet. Quiet in a heavy, muffled way. Strong-smelling flowers on this table next to us in the lobby.

They’re pretty. But I’m not going to take a picture of them to draw later. Flowers are supposed to make you feel hope. These remind me of death.
