Don’t, by the way, read too much into the differences here between men and women. Neither man nor woman can go it alone or claim priority.

1 Corinthians 11:10 Message

In Christ, men and women are interdependent rather than independent, yet there still exists in Christian culture the age-old rivalry known as the battle of the sexes.

The differences of men and women were meant to complement one another. Where there is mutual dependence and inclusion, supremacy and hierarchy are eliminated.

The apostle Paul continues, “Man was created first, as a beautiful shining reflection of God—that is true. But the head on a woman’s body clearly outshines in beauty the head of her ‘head,’ her husband” (v. 11 Message). I love the value Paul bestows on men and women, husbands and wives.

“The first woman came from man, true—but ever since then, every man comes from a woman! And since virtually everything comes from God anyway, let’s quit going through these ‘who’s first’ routines” (v. 12 Message).

The rivalry of who is first and who is best should come to a screeching halt with the revelation of who God is. We need to recover our divine perspective that God alone is holy. He is first and last, our Alpha and Omega. No one loves and leads like our Father. This means he does not love sons more and daughters less. Nor does he love each gender equally. He loves male and female uniquely. When we elevate one above the other, we deviate from God’s idea.
