Ellie heard her mum sigh, knew Jasmine was about to answer for her, and no fucking way would she let that happen. She might only be seventeen, might have gotten up here by the grace of mum and Frank and tour-manager-guy, but for Lenore and for the band and yeah, fuck yeah, for her own bloody self, she was going to play what her gut demanded.

Sort of.

“You liked that cover of ‘Creep’ I did,” Ellie said. “I guess I’ve got time for two songs, so I’ll do that first to get them on my side, and then I’ll risk an original, this one I wrote called ‘Girl and Guitar.’ ”

Frank gave a slow nod of satisfaction. “That’ll be perfect. The punters’ll love it.”

What the hell? Yeah, they’d played “Girl and Guitar” at the party Frank had seen the video of, but he remembered it? Ellie wondered if she might be dreaming all of this? She’d written a lot of songs, but “Girl and Guitar” might be her most personal, and also the one that had made things more pleasantly awkward between her and Lenore than ever, given that the chorus identified her sexuality as “any pretty, sweaty girl with a growl in her voice and a guitar in her hands.” It didn’t mean Ellie had zero interest in guys—she’d never opened herself up like that to anyone—but the song put into words the one thing she found irresistible.

“Come on,” Frank said, and she didn’t have to be asked twice. Her feet were already in motion, that hook in her chest reeling her toward center stage even faster than Frank could escort her.

“You too, Mum,” Frank called over his shoulder.
