Chapter Fifteen

I’d like to say I’d gotten better at figuring out if I’d been followed, but apparently, I’d lost my edge. Even Thorn had been too busy to detect them. The eleven men advanced toward us. With my bad luck over the last couple of months, a hellhound was not far behind.

The air was thick with tension as the moonlight glimmered faintly off the surface of the nearby creek.

My clammy grip on the goblin blade faltered as the weapon extended into a silver-tipped spear. Beside me, Thorn’s fists clenched. Even the elf couldn’t wait to fight. The delight on her face bordered on manic.

The short, redheaded man holding the .45 smirked at us. “Long time no see, Stravinsky.” His finger tightened on the trigger.

“Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t remember you,” I murmured.

His smirk widened. “We were rather busy at the time. You and a bunch of your friends put up quite the fight that day.”

“Jackson pack, right?” I couldn’t resist adding, “Didn’t you lose that day?”

Gun dude fired a single shot at my feet. I didn’t flinch as a growl rumbled in Thorn’s chest.

“Enough talk.” Thorn lunged toward the gunman with a snarl. Gun dude barely had time to react as Thorn’s hand clamped down on his wrist, twisting it violently. The gun tumbled to the ground. With a swift kick, Thorn sent the man sprawling into the tall grass.

The others charged. The first attacker came at me with a knife, slashing wildly. I parried with the shaft of my spear, then thrust the tip forward, catching him in the shoulder. He howled in pain, the sound abruptly cut off as I used the spear shaft to sweep his legs from under him.

Four couldn’t wait to pounce on Calliope. She surged forward as her blades sliced through two of them. One of her opponents, a rather bold fellow with a machete, tried to get in a hit and she cleaved his blade in two. He took another look at her and bolted.

Not far from me, Thorn never stopped moving. He picked up another man and hurled him into the nearby creek. The poor man flopped about as his face scraped the rocky bottom. Another man came at Thorn and my mate ducked a wild swing. Then Thorn delivered a crushing blow to the man’s stomach, followed by an uppercut that sent him flying.

Now there were three left.

A guy in a light green T-shirt approached me and bared his teeth. I pivoted to face him. Green shirt dude dodged my first swipe, but not fast enough to avoid my second jab. The goblin blade slid through his shoulder, eliciting a scream as the silver burned him.

The two remaining fellows hovered beyond reach. The confident smirks on their faces had melted away. Now they helped their fallen friends up and crept back—away from Calliope. The elf motioned for them to attack her, but they shook their heads.

Smartest move you’ve made today, boys.

We watched them limp, scamper, and crawl away.

“Let’s take them out so they don’t follow us.
