Loki has been teaching me to pick things up. Sometimes it works, if I concentrate very hard but then I always drop them. I can’t stay solid for as long as he can. I get very tired after and have to nap if we work on it for too long.

But I do want to try one of those PsyTreats. Loki says they taste like a warm hug.

I miss hugs. I miss Eleanor. But I’d like to try a PsyTreat.

--Thoughts from Luna

Back in my car, I gazed out the window at the gorgeous North Norfolk coast. I’d parked in a council car park near the beach, and though it was a weekday, quite a few people were enjoying the sand, mainly dog walkers and couples strolling hand in hand.

The grey sea hungrily consumed broken sandcastles and puppy paw prints with every wave, smoothing the sandy canvas once again in an eternal cycle older than man.

“I need to do something,” I decided. Otherwise, I’d watch the waves all day.

But what?

Did I trust the word of Trish, the super gossip hairdresser? Or should I confirm what she had told me about the land sale? I couldn’t do much about the will, but the land sale was probably easy to check out, right? I just had to ask the council if an application had been submitted.

I dug around in my glovebox for sustenance and came up only with a tube of mints. Popping one in my mouth, I scrolled the internet for the North Norfolk District Council number and went through all the usual recorded garbage before pleasant but ear-splitting classical music filled the car. Why did they have to have the hold music so loud?

I was once again watching the waves as they knocked over a toddler who’d got too close when the music abruptly stopped, and a bored, nasal voice greeted me and asked my name.

“Willow Addison,” I began, “I was just calling to check if an application for a land sale has been agreed upon.”

“Reference number?” the voice asked, in a completely flat tone.

“I don’t have one. I was hoping you could maybe search for the property and see if it is being sold for land and an incinerator built. If it's not too much trouble?”

The sigh that drifted down the phone told me this was too much trouble, but I was asked for a postcode anyway, and I heard the slow tap of keys as he entered the information.

“Nothing is coming up on the system. Tiny village, that. I’m sure I’d have heard if we were building something like an incinerator there.”

“You’re one hundred per cent sure there’s nothing?” I pressed. “Can you just refresh in case-”

“Look, there’s nothing here. The property is privately owned. Nothing I can see about it being sold or a change of land use request. And no bids or submissions to build an incinerator in Catton Strawless. Is there anything else I can help you with today?”

After hanging up, I exhaled a long, low breath. Trish had been right; it was all fake.
