CHAPTER 31

A cold snout pushes into my ear, rousing me from sleep. I was possessed last night. Zeppelin is clearly ready for attention. He leaps onto the bed and demands morning snuggles. As I pet him, I struggle to remember what went down last night in my temple. A knock on the door, followed by Stephen’s voice interrupts my thoughts, “Leda, are you up?”

“Yeah, come in!”

“You wanna have breakfast before I head to the airport?” He peeks around the door.

“Sure. Are Sebastian and Alan awake?”

“What?” Stephen questions, narrowing his eyes.

“Are Sebastian and Alan awake?” I repeat.

Stephen steps fully into the room and flashes a puzzled look. “How drunk were you last night?” When I don’t respond, he continues, “Sebastian left after the party. You told me you saw him off. And Alan…Alan’s in New York as far as I know.” He squints. “Are you naked?”

“Oh,” is all I can muster. If Stephen’s telling the truth, then I’ve lost time memory because I sure don’t remember seeing Sebastian off. “I’ll meet you on the patio for breakfast.”

I wash my face and peer in the mirror while patting a dry towel over my chin. My appearance has been altered. It’s still me but my cheeks are a little higher, my blond hair a bit more lustrous. Yesterday, my eyes were brown, but this morning, I lean closer to the mirror, they’re mahogany and brighter. And my lips, I run my index finger along my bottom lip, is plumper. I turn from the mirror, mentally scrolling through what I can remember of last night while padding down the hallway to the back terrace to join Stephen for breakfast.

There’s no evidence of the pool party. The space is immaculate, the pool crystal clear, the decorations taken down. Everything back to normal.

“Me and a hammam from Tempe played baseball deep into the fourth inning,” Stephen grins while buttering an English muffin.

“Ew. Spare me the metaphors and details, please,” I beg before asking Marisol for a bloody mary.”

Stephen, with a wicked smile, bites into a poached egg. “I love Sebastian, but I’m glad we can finally eat a meal with animal products. One can only take so much tofu and beans.” He stops chewing and examines me. “Something’s different.”

“Whatcha mean?” I feign ignorance, salting an egg.

“I don’t know. You look different.”

“Is that a good thing?”

“Um, yeah. Yeah. Sophisticated. More sophisticated, somehow.”

“Okay, I’ll take sophisticated.” I’m eager to get off this topic.

“I thought you were going to spend two days with me? Why are you leaving a day early?”

“Alan really needs my help.” He shrugs. Stephen loves to be needed.

“Have you instructed the captain and crew you’re flying out today?”

“Sent a text early this morning. I’ll head out as soon as I shower.”

After a few more bites of egg and munching on bacon, he asks, “When do you plan on returning to New York? Alan wanted me to find out.”

“I told Alan I need a month in Arizona. I wish he’d stop pressuring me. New York is for business; Arizona for creativity.
