Entr’acte: The Dead Composers’ Café

I remember the coffee that the philosopher Vittorio Hösle used to brew for me in his house in South Bend, Indiana, as some of the best in my life, in part because the aroma of the exciting beverage went so well with our conversations. Among his numerous publications he wrote a best-selling book titled The Dead Philosophers’ Café in which he imagines a coffeehouse where philosophers from different epochs gather and debate.38 I wonder what a Dead Composers’ Café would be like. I can imagine Bach running into Mozart, offering him a freshly brewed coffee and having a casual conversation prompted by the flavor and smell of their hot beverage:
