Chapter 16

Henry disappeared to let off some steam, which was fine by me because I had messages to check. Atlantis didn’t receive any sort of Internet connection thanks to the magic that kept it hidden from human perception, so I could only use modern technology here at the office.

I opened the door to a tiny room with a computer and desk. Since I hadn’t checked in a while, I had hundreds of unread email messages. I deleted all the spam first, then went through the stuff that required input: managing bank accounts, answering an old colleague’s email, that kind of thing. Once I’d gone through those, I briefly checked the landline office phone, not really expecting anything urgent.

Lindsey had left a long voicemail.

I swallowed. I’d wanted to get back to Lindsey and my brother, but so much had gone sideways with my life. I didn’t know if I had the emotional bandwidth to deal with them right now.

I summoned up my courage and hit the playback button.

Lindsey’s cheerful voice filled my ears. “Heya, girl! First time using this number, but Jason said I’d have better luck trying you here. Sorry it took me a few days to call you after our last meeting. Life’s been hectic.”

“For you and me both,” I muttered.

“Anyway,” she continued. “Just checking in to see how you were doing, what with the magic and all. Is that what you call it? Or is there some lingo I don’t know? One of these days you’re going to have to give me all the details!”

I cracked a smile in spite of myself. Only Lindsey could be thrust into the fae world and ask for “the scoop” as if I’d only been hiding a new boyfriend from her.

Her voice suddenly took a serious tone. “I hope you still aren’t mad about my relationship with Jason. It’s not something we planned or anything. I should have mentioned it sooner, but you were always gone.”

“It’s not your fault,” I replied as if she could hear me.

“And I swear I’m trying to get Jason to come around. He’s pretty spooked by the whole magical tree thing. I don’t think it’s really sunk in yet that you’re a fairy librarian.”

“I hadn’t noticed,” I said with heavy sarcasm.

“But I’ll keep working on him. When he’s ready, I’m sure the two of you will hash things out and everything will go back to normal.”

I shook my head as she said goodbye and hung up. “Things aren’t ever going back to normal.”

“Does that upset you?” a voice asked.

Henry leaned against the doorframe. He’d ditched the suit and redonned his normal plaid shirt and jeans, which made me a little sad since I liked him all fancied up.

“Nah, I’m not upset.” I stood, smoothing out the wrinkles that had formed on my dress. “My so-called normal life before wasn’t all that great, as you recall.”

“It sounds like your best friend and brother found out about the library.”

My face burned. I hadn’t told anyone about that yet. I had no idea how much trouble we would get into.
