We reached the bottom of the mountain and popped out on a back road, where we made our way down to Highway 30 and headed toward the Columbia River. The sun was beginning to set, and Mount St. Helens illuminated the rosy sky with its snow-white reflection. I clung tightly to Jasper as he leaned the motorcycle near the ground and turned us off the highway. Our bodies jostled up and down as we crossed over train tracks and emerged onto an unmarked road that ran side by side with the river. Sparkling hues of yellow and gold bounced off the murky water under the setting sun.
As we continued west, the tree line steadily thickened until the river was no longer visible from the road. Jasper slowed and turned down an unmaintained drive marked with a No Trespassing sign. We slowly drove along the tree-lined, bumpy road until we arrived at a wide grass field that contained an enormous two-story house shaped like a boxy warehouse. Both the top and bottom levels had wooden decks that wrapped around the entire building. All the windows had been tinted to keep anyone on the outside from peering in. Several vehicles were parked throughout the field, and a loud, thumping bass boomed from within the building.
My neck felt the instant relief of weight being lifted as I pulled the heavy helmet from atop my head. I surveyed the area. A thick mass of trees surrounded the clearing, guarding the building, so it wasnât visible from the main road up above. âWhat is this place?â It didnât look like much from the outside.
âCome on, Iâll show you.â Jasper hauled me toward the building.
We came to a door with another No Trespassing sign. âAre you sure we should be here?â I whispered, starting to pull back, but Jasper was already opening the door like heâd been invited, and tugged me in behind him.
Once inside, the decor was a full 360 compared to the outside. The small foyer we stood in held a Victorian mahogany desk and plush red velvet chairs. A pair of red Converse flexed up and down atop the desk. The man wearing the shoes was sitting with his feet kicked up and a hardback book in his hands. How he could read with the loud music pumping throughout the building was beyond me. My chest was literally vibrating with each beat of the bass.
âJasper!â Book Guy stood and came around the desk. âLong time no see, my friend.â The two gave each other a quick hug and pat on the back. He stood about a head shorter than Jasper. His attire was full-on nerdâtechâgeek with a flair of retro: black-collared dress shirt with a deep red necktie, black-rimmed square retro glasses, black skinny jeans, and red Converse shoes to tie it all together. He turned to me. âAnd who is this lovely creature with you tonight?â
âNeil, this is Everly. Ev, this is Neil. He owns the place.â
âNice to meet you, Neil,â I said loudly over the music coming from an unseen room.
