I take a shower and get dressed, cursing that I threw my clothes in the suitcase last night without giving much thought as to what goes with what. I have to make do with a cream blouse, ugly old brown woollen trousers and a burgundy cardigan, which only just goes with the trousers.

‘Come on, Mungo. Let’s have a quick walk in the park.’

I attach his collar to the lead, grab the house keys Rob left me, swipe the alarm fob over the panel and lock the door.

As we’re walking past my car, I see it.

‘Oh God!’

Under the windscreen wipers of my car is a single-stemmed dark-red rose, almost black in colour. It looks like the twin to the rose on Annette’s body.
