Casey skillfully maneuvered the car around the winding roads that led inland towards Nash Brothers Farm, pulling into the parking lot and finding a spot near the entrance.
"I wasn't expecting tour buses," I mused as Casey unclicked my belt.
Approximately thirty tourists of all ages poured from the open door of the bus, everyone seemingly excited about what lay ahead.
I scanned the area as I stepped into the warm air, pulling my T-shirt from its spot glued to my body. It was another hot day in Hawaii.
"We know what to grab for snacks before we leave," said Casey, nodding towards the shop besides the entrance sign.
"Yeah. It looks good." I licked my lips, noting the colorful racks of delicious-looking fruits and vegetables. Then I noted the tourists bustling ahead of us. "We might need to be quick though."
Casey chuckled as we jostled to the front of the queue.
Once it was our turn, Casey asked the pimply kid on the gate if we could speak to Matthew Nash.
"Ummm, I dunno," the kid replied, scratching his neck. "Maybe you could ask someone once you get in. It's thirty dollars a head, and the tour goes for half an hour. After that you're allowed to wander this first field and take photos."
I choked on the price, but Casey paid the money, and the gates opened for us. Once inside we were directed towards the crowd gathering in front of a woman wearing khaki shorts and a blue polo shirt, the farm logo on the left breast pocket.
Casey stepped over to ask her about Matthew Nash, but she just told him to stay in the group and all our answers would be dealt with shortly.
Patience wasn't something I was big on, but I used the time to peruse my surroundings.
The business side of things was on my left, where three large sheds dominated the landscape. A forklift buzzed from Shed One carrying large boxes marked bananas and loading them all into a waiting truck. Sheds Two and Three seemed relatively quiet, but the occasional staff member dressed in the same uniform as our tour guide stepped out into the sunlight, rushing towards the shop.
I moved my gaze to the fields in front of us and towards acre upon acre of lush green vegetables and orchards of banana trees, the volcanic range providing the perfect backdrop. It was pretty spellbinding.
"Are we really doing the tour?" I asked Casey, the desire to wander the fields almost overwhelming.
"Yeah. We might learn something."
"We don't have a whole lot of time," I commented, checking my watch.
Just as I did, the tour guide called for us to follow her through the rows of developed vegetables, where we learned many interesting facts. I made a note to tell Luke about the tour, as I knew being a chef he would have loved it.
Once the official bit was over, Casey made his way towards the leader to ask if we could now chat with Matthew Nash, and I made a beeline to the ladies' toilets.
