THE HONEYBUN HOME SMELLED like soup and biscuits when they walked in the front door. Fabiana grinned and licked her lips, her stomach grumbling. They’d only had time to grab a glass of juice and some toast before running out the door that morning. They’d had a busy morning at the Speedway, settling some issues they’d both let go over the past several days and trying to placate their crews, who were apoplectic about the fact that they hadn’t been around.

To make matters worse, Warwicke’s crew chief, Todd Jacobs, hadn’t shown up to work for several days and nobody could find him. Warwicke was really worried about the man. They’d been friends for years.

Fabiana cast him a furtive glance as they started down the hallway, toward the noisy kitchen. His face was drawn, with deep frown lines across his brow, but he’d fixed a smile on his face in anticipation of greeting his family.

Fabiana grabbed his hand and squeezed it. “We’ll find him.”

Warwicke lifted her hand to his lips and kissed the back of it. “I know.” What he didn’t tell her was that he was concerned about the condition they’d find him in. Todd had issues. Issues that they’d been able to help him rise above over the last several years. But he was a man who often found himself on the wrong end of a decision, and Warwicke had a strong suspicion that Todd had reacted badly to Casio’s murder and had reverted to some of his evil ways.

They entered the melee in the warm, bright kitchen and were almost immediately assaulted by a very tall woman with dark blue eyes and a soft cloud of blonde hair. The older woman pulled Warwicke into a hug and kissed his forehead like he was eight years old.

Fabiana grinned widely, totally charmed.

Until the hug monster turned her way. She was grabbed at the shoulders and yanked into a very hardy embrace. “Fabiana! I’d know you anywhere. I have one of your posters hanging in my sewing room.”

“Mom!” Warwicke looked appalled.

Fabiana laughed.

Mrs. Honeybun made a dismissive noise and patted his shoulder. “We women have to stick together, Wicke. I still root for you, too.”

“Gee thanks.”

A handsome, older man with graying red hair offered his hand to Fabiana. “I’m Warwicke’s dad, Fabiana. You can call me Bob.”

She shook his hand. “Hello.”

Mrs. Honeybun placed an arm around Fabiana’s shoulders and led her toward the biggest iron pot Fabiana had ever seen. “I’m Wanda.”

“Nice to meet you.” Fabiana offered.

The aroma wafting from the pot was incredible. Fabiana’s mouth watered in delighted anticipation.

Two of Warwicke’s brothers were fighting over the ladle and laughing as bits of carrot and potato flew in all directions. Mrs. Honeybun grabbed the ladle from them, shouldered them out of the way and said, “You two will clean that up.”

Both men, well over six feet tall, broad shouldered and square jawed, said, “Yes, ma’am,” almost in unison and headed for the sink, jostling each other playfully along the way.

Mrs. Honeybun rolled her pretty blue eyes at Fabiana.
