Chapter Ten

Starfall continued for I don’t even know how long. The warm liquid completely soaked our bodies, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable feeling, especially when we were holding each other.

Honestly, it almost felt like the whole experience was a dream. Like I’d wake up in my bed in Salinas Valley and realize none of this was real. But I could feel Ellyn’s heart beating in her chest as her bare body pressed against mine. And I could hear her soft breathing as we watched the wonder of Starfall happen right in front of us.

Fang had started catching the droplets in his mouth, and he was running happily around the hill in a wild attempt to catch as many as he could. It was incredibly endearing, and Ellyn and I looked over from time to time to watch the crazy pup jump up into the air.

Neither of us wanted to get up, so we stayed. And, eventually, we both fell asleep right under the stars.

I’d moved my jeans, which still had my holster attached, over to us, so if anything tried to creep up on us in the night, I could just grab my Glock and shoot at it. But Ellyn had reassured me through sleepy grumbles that we were pretty safe up here. Usually anything sinister would lurk in the woods, and we were well enough away from them to be safe.

The sun rising up over the horizon woke us up the next morning, and I groaned as the bright light suddenly hit my face. I covered my eyes with my hand as I tried to adjust, but then I noticed my hand was shimmering in the light of the sun.

I pulled it further away from my face and saw that almost my entire arm was covered in a light shimmery coat, and when I looked down at the rest of my naked body, it was the exact same.

“Oh, my god,” I groaned as I fought back a laugh. “I look like a goddamn vampire.”

“What did you say?” Ellyn asked sleepily as she sat up from my chest.

I let out a breathless sigh at the sight of her. She was covered in the glittery coating, too, but she looked ethereal. Or, at least, more ethereal than usual. Her entire being was glowing as the sun peeked over the trees in the distance, and it looked like her skin was made out of tiny diamonds.

“Ellyn…” I trailed off breathlessly. “You look incredible.”

“What?” Ellyn’s brow twitched in confusion before she looked down at her body and giggled. “Oh.”

“We’re completely covered in star juice,” I joked, and I ran my hand down my chest and watched as my fingers left a trail in the shimmery substance.

“Yeah, I can’t say I’ve ever stayed out during Starfall,” Ellyn giggled again and rubbed her hand down her arm. “What does Fang look like?”

I turned to look for the wolf, and when I whistled, he came bounding up the hill with his tongue hanging out. His white fur was completely covered, just like us, and he ran up to us like a disco ball with legs.
