Chapter 16—Corey

Corey surveyed the terrain, his gaze sweeping over the area. He approached a fallen log and moved it aside, creating a seating area for his companions. “Alright, let’s take a moment to rest and have a quick meal. I sense the beast. After we eat, everyone rest while I scout out the ambush spot.”

As the others plopped to the ground, their exhaustion clear in their grumbling, Corey wasted no time. While they complained, he set to work digging a fire pit and kindling a fire. The flickering flames danced in the chilly air, casting an orange glow on their surroundings. He prepared a large, hearty stew. “Hey, Rebecca, could you do me a favor and take charge of heating and distributing the stew?” Despite her grimace, she nodded in agreement. He disliked burdening his companions, but it was the most practical choice. The Nephilim beast moved fast.

The disheveled campsite and scattered backpacks testified to Corey’s plan. He had pushed the team to their limits, and their weariness gave him hope. His plan revolved on exhausting Lance physically. Lance was an ancient evil housed in a human’s body and he bet the entity did not understand the limitations of flesh. Once they killed Lance, he could then plan for the beast. He was about to face two enemies and he had to have help to fight each one. To make things easier on his mind, he used the monikers of Lance and ancient evil in place of each other. He couldn’t afford to waste time thinking about what to call the entity.

Determined, Corey removed his shirt, exposing his solar plexus to channel more Earth power, and maneuvered through the dense underbrush towards the path leading to the ledge.

The distance measured ten miles from the spot where Suit and Red Shirt had pushed Haley and Corrinne off the cliff. The supernatural beast lurked closer than ideal. Undeterred, he remained confident that they were within an acceptable range. His plan involved blocking the entire ledge with a magical circle, trapping Lance, the ancient evil. Navigating the treacherous path, a mere foot wide and composed of loose dirt and crumbling rocks, he would need to assist or carry each member of his team.

Skidding down the precarious path, Corey landed on a patch of light gray rock adorned with thin, scraggly bushes clinging to the cracks. Debris from above littered the ground. After venturing half a mile towards the path leading to a lower level, he discovered a straight ten-foot section extending for twenty feet. The sporadic patches of scrub did little to impede his progress, but he cleared rocks from the area, creating a circle spanning the entire width. Behind a rock located ten feet ahead, he arranged a honeysuckle bush and extracted eleven twigs from it.

Once placed within the circle, Corey concealed the twigs beneath a layer of debris, using his druidic vision granted by the torc. Within the confines of the ravine, darkness descended earlier because of the imposing tree line to the west.
