The next several days were the hardest Ray had ever had to endure in his life. Daniel had been correct when he’d said Viv would retreat into himself. The others had kept him abreast of what was going on in Viv’s life—like the fact that Viv had tried to resign from the family corporation. Grandma had stepped in and told him that his resignation was unacceptable and he needed to get back to work and school.

In the week that followed the whole Grace fiasco, Viv had kept as far away from Ray as possible. The request Daniel had made a week ago was looking better and better. Tonight, when they belatedly celebrated Daniel’s twenty-first birthday, Viv was going to get a talking to, whether he liked it or not.

Nervous, Ray walked into the nightclub with Grandma. She must have sensed what he was feeling. In her own way, she did everything to make him laugh. The instant she heard the driving beat of the music playing, she made him take her straight out onto the dance floor. They must have looked funny dancing to Good Charlotte’s Keep Your Hands Off My Girl. Since everything that had happened, Ray knew Viv wouldn’t come near.

Jasper and Beth were dancing nearby until Jasper cut in and Ray found himself in Beth’s arms.

“Dan told us how Viv’s still avoiding you,” she said as she wrapped herself around him. After a while, she added, “Am I supposed to still pretend I hate him? You know I will if you want me to, but it’s hard to see him so sad and withdrawn.”

Ray shook his head. “You never had to pretend to hate him, and as for Viv, well, he’s doing something he feels is right, even if it is stupid.” Ray led her back to a table, knelt, and kissed her still flat-as-a-pancake stomach. “Be safe, my baby.”

“Why are you still staying at Grandma’s?”

“To be honest, Viv still isn’t ready for us to be together again.” He sat on the seat beside her and gently caressed her belly.

Beth stopped his hand. “If you keep rubbing me, you know I’ll have to pee. I can’t seem to do anything else lately.”

He chuckled. “Sorry, but you’d better get used to my hands being on you again. You’ve got my baby in there.”

Jasper was laughing when he came to the table with Grandma in tow. “Grandma, you’re a dancing demon!” He winked at Ray. “Are you done feeling up my wife?”

“For the moment, but remember, I have eight months left of feeling her up.” Ray grinned then looked up as Daniel and Girly joined them.

Girly sat on his lap and threw her arms around him. “Are you okay?”

Daniel knelt beside him. “I understood if you don’t want to be here. I know how much of a fucktard my brother is being.”
