Chapter Eight
GAYLA OPENED HER EYES just long enough to check the time on her watch. Another hour. She absently rubbed her elbows and flexed her fingers and feet. She felt cold. Gayla sighed and slowly shifted her body to a more comfortable position, gnawing her lips when the ache in her arms turned momentarily sharp. The unread magazine, newspaper and folder of papers on her lap slid off sideways to the floor. She made a futile attempt to grab them but missed. It was a full ten seconds before Gayla made any move to pick up her things.
David, seated next to Gayla, noticed her clumsiness and bent to retrieve the scattered items. He silently handed them back to her.
She found it an effort and had to use both hands. âThanks,â Gayla said in a thin, flat voice.
She wasnât surprised when she got no response. David sat back in his seat and closed his eyes again.
The last hour and a half since boarding the Metroliner out of New Yorkâs Perm Station headed to Washington, D.C., had been passed in absolute silence between them. It was beginning to get on her nerves. Gayla realized, however, that perhaps she had unnecessarily provoked David by again making a decision for him.
Fumbling, Gayla managed to put away the reading material in her leather tote. Except for the manila folder. She turned to study Davidâs profile. His long legs were stretched out and crossed at the ankles. His hands were clasped on his lap where he held a book that also had not been opened. She watched the way his head swayed gently with the train motion. He looked like he was sleeping, but Gayla knew he was not. He wasnât really relaxed. His brows were drawn together and his mouth was closed tightly. She could see the muscle in his jaw working.
He was still angry.
Gayla shifted yet again, more toward him. âLook, I know you donât feel like talking to me. I know youâd rather not be here, but you are. I really need to go over some things with you. Pleaseâ¦â she said reasonably.
He remained still for so long after sheâd finished that she suddenly wondered what she was going to do if David really refused to talk to her. But he shrugged his shoulders.
âSo go ahead and talk. Youâre going to do whatever you want without my say-so, anyhow.â
âWhat are you mad about? I told you about the interviewâ¦â
His mouth curled cynically. âExcept for the fact that it was going to take place in Washington on national TVâ¦â
âThe TV thing didnât really happen until yesterday. I told you as soon as I knew.â
David glared at her. âThatâs the problem. You told me; you didnât ask if I wanted to do this. But Iâm just an ex-con. Why worry how I feel about anything, right?â
Gayla could almost feel the coiled tension in him. Sheâd hit a nerve. Her own were beginning to feel bruised and tender. But she couldnât blame David for that. âYouâre overreacting.
