Ash gazed at the map, tracing her finger over the sketched-in mountains, kingdom borders, rivers, and coastline. “Will we travel to all of these places?” she asked, hopeful.

“Well,” Will replied, “that’s one of the things I wanted to talk to you about. “We won’t have to go to the six kingdoms. They’re meeting up in the same place. The kingdoms of Fallenwood are going to war.”

“Why?”

“Because love and reason no longer govern here. Let me tell you a bit more about the kingdoms before I elaborate about the coming war. West Julia has traditionally been the ally of Richland. Richland is the wealthiest kingdom, while the Copper Kingdom is the poorest. Lexburg has always been staunchly independent. The kingdoms of Julia and West Julia, ruled over by rival twin brothers who named their kingdoms after the same girl, have been at war with each other since the beginning of time. Anyway, that covers all six. As for why they’re going to war, honestly, who knows? Do we ever know why wars start? Most of the time, we don’t. It’s the royalty of a kingdom that starts a war—a war that the average working man has to fund in work and gold and blood. Speaking of gold...” He opened a small wooden box that sat on the table, revealing a single gold coin.

“May I pick it up?” asked Ash. Will nodded. Ash carefully plucked the coin from its box and examined it. She read the words “Palomides Hyperion” that had been struck around the edge of the portrait that sat front and center. She could not help noticing the resemblance between the face of the Great King and her own.

“I wanted to give you both coins at once—this one and the one I gave you earlier, that ceramic one. But it would have been too much to try and explain it all at once. This coin proves your lineage. You are the descendant of Palomides Hyperion, Ash, and you have a great destiny. You have come here to bring us peace.”

Though Ash doubted the things Will told her, she felt a lightness of spirit that told her his words must be true.
