Dream Weaver

Rieave was sinking. His body weighed a thousand pounds and stung with the bite of glacial coldness. He tried to shout but couldn’t muster enough energy for it. He sank deeper and deeper into the dark, like a sinking anchor in the deepest ocean.

A light shined above, and he willed his arms to work. Kicking his legs, he swam toward it. He broke through the surface to see swirling black clouds and streaks of violet lightning. He stepped out of the water, and it changed to soggy ground. It was the stinking mud of the Moor.

The only thing visible in the hellacious storm was a tree. Rue’s tree. Below it lay the broken graves of the forgotten fae. Webbed claws broke the surface of a dark puddle below the gnarled tree. A wide face with a wolf-like snout and drooling, gaping maw peered out. Rue’s tree cracked and groaned, then blasted apart as the creature burst through the muck, fully revealing its hideous form—a sort of aquatic wolf with piercing deep red eyes. It stalked toward him and he stumbled away from the menacing beast. It lunged at him across the space and knocked him back on himself. As he hit the mud, he was pulled down again through the puddle, back to the icy water below. Sinking…drowning.
