Chapter 8

“You must be Bobby Granger. I’m Justin Erixon.” Justin stood up from the table, extending his hand. Bobby shook it and held one of the chairs for Michaela.

“Hello to you, too,” Michaela teased Justin.

“Please.” Justin rolled his eyes. “I know you. He’s the new guy,” Justin teased back, but he still embraced her warmly. “Seriously, though,” he continued after they had all taken their seats, “it’s nice to meet you.”

“And it’s nice to meet the man who forgot to tell us Howard Michaels was a woman,” Bobby joked dryly.

Justin laughed. “Did I forget to mention that?”

“Justin has an unusual sense of humor,” Michaela said with a roll of her eyes.

A server came by with menus and took their drink orders. By the time the waitress returned with three coffees, they were ready to order. The basics handled, Justin turned back to Bobby.

“How do you like the city?”

“We’re not getting to see much of it, I’m afraid,” Michaela answered for him. “I just wanted to stay home last night and today’s all business.”

“But we had great Chinese delivery, so it wasn’t a complete loss,” Bobby joked.

Justin stared at him for a moment before starting to laugh. “I like him, Mike. Tell me”—he turned his attention to her—“does Sean know you’re in town?”

“No.” Michaela spoke quickly, giving her agent a stern look. “Not this weekend. So, how’s the baby?”

Justin grinned. Reaching for his wallet, he produced pictures of a beautiful woman and an even prettier baby girl. Bobby looked politely and made the appropriate noises. Still, he hadn’t missed the hard look Michaela had given the other man when he had mentioned Sean—whoever that was. He’d let it go for now, but it was worth a conversation. He didn’t want to be trespassing, so to speak.

“And how’s the book coming?” Justin asked, putting away the pictures. “All issues with access resolved?”

“The access issues are handled, even if Betsy’s still not happy.” Michaela and Bobby exchanged amused smiles. “And the book is coming along well.”

“Really?” Justin double-checked.

“Well, enough that I completely forgot about this weekend and didn’t want to break away from it,” Michaela explained.

“I see you were so unwilling that you brought your primary research source with you,” Justin noted.

“Sure, Justin.” Michaela matched his amused sarcasm. Bobby just sipped his coffee. “Moving on,” Michaela continued, all business, “what was Teri telling me about PBS?”

Justin’s enthusiasm was interrupted as the server brought their food. “Why, when we need some time to really talk, is this the one time the kitchen decides to break a speed record?” he muttered. “Anyway”—he stressed the word as everyone settled into their meals—“they want to make The Motherland Wars into a TV special.”

“And what do you think about it?” Michaela asked him.

“Mike,” Justin sighed, “of course you should do it. I wouldn’t have brought it to you if I didn’t think you should do it.”

“For what it’s worth,” Bobby spoke up, “that’s probably my favorite of your books. I think it could be done really well.”

“See?” Justin lifted his hands, motioning to Bobby.
