David slushed to a stop at the bottom of the off-ramp. The cross street was a thoroughfare of heavy traffic racing to beat the afternoon rush, thereby creating its own afternoon rush. The rain fell in dense blurry sheets, tattooing his car like a drum. His windshield was fogging, and as he waited for the light to turn green, David switched on the defroster. Suddenly his car was bumped from behind. David glanced in his mirror, but the back window was fogged up as well. Flicking on the rear window defroster, thin horizontal lines of clarity immediately appearing, he turned around to see who had hit him.

Without warning, the BMW lurched forward as the rear bumper was rammed again. To his horror, David realized his car was being pushed through the crosswalk and into the near traffic lane. A huge semi-trailer, its horns blaring angrily, just missed his front end as it roared by.

Virtually standing on the brake pedal, David whipped around and saw Barton Hubble’s face, his eyes like windows into hell. With a malevolent grin, he pressed his huge tow truck into the back of David’s car, propelling the BMW into the snarl of speeding cross traffic.

Frantically searching for a break in the river of cars, David cranked the steering wheel hard to the right and stomped the gas pedal to the floor, sending his car clambering onto the sidewalk. Once there, he was able to find an opening and slip safely into the traffic.

Looking in his mirror, David saw Hubble, his truck windows rolled down in spite of the rain. Slowly raising his hand, Hubble let something shiny and silver dangle from his fingers. David’s watch. From the peculiar bobbing motion of his head, David could tell, even as he pulled away, that Barton Hubble was laughing at him.
