Zoe sat outside Windstarâs stall in one of the molded plastic lawn chairs sheâd brought from her front porch and reveled in the relative quiet. The Pony Barn was mostly void of humans at the moment, and even though her ears still hummed from the noise of the modified tractors, she could hear the soft horsey sounds of munching with an occasional snort. Darkness had brought cooler air. While the roar of diesel engines continued to drift up the hill, Zoe embraced the peace.
Patsy appeared in the barnâs doorway and shuffled over to claim the second lawn chair. The harsh light of the overhead bare bulb did little to improve her glum expression.
âHave you seen Shane?â Zoe asked.
Patsy turned to her. âSeriously? You had to mention his name.â
âOnly because Pete and I have been all over these fairgrounds looking for him to no avail.â
âPete? What does Pete want with him?â
âIt seems he knew Vera Palmer.â
âReally?â
âHe never mentioned to you that she was his accountant?â
Patsy continued to glare. âHow many of your old boyfriends shared the names of their bookkeepers with you?â
âGood point. Sorry I brought him up.â
Patsy sat back in the chair. After several long moments of silence, she said, âNo, I havenât seen him. Not since this morning when he decked the judge. Who then took it out on me.â
âI donât think Cody held Shaneâs behavior against you.â
Patsy shifted to face her. âWhose side are you on?â
Zoe considered mentioning Jazzelâs poor manners but decided against it. âForget I said anything.â
Patsy relaxed, and they let the silence settle around them again.
But another topic had been festering in Zoeâs mind for hours. âCody wants to buy Windstar.â
Sheâd expected Patsy to either leap or fall out of the chair. Instead, Zoe wondered if sheâd fallen asleep and hadnât heard. But then Patsy sat up and turned toward her. Slowly. Deliberately. âThat son of a bitch.â
âExcuse me?â
âAre you gonna do it?â
Zoe wanted to say no. Of course not. Sheâd never sell Windstar. Wouldnât even consider it. Instead, she said, âI donât know.â
Patsy flopped back, closed her eyes, and swore.
âI didnât say I was. I said I donât know.â
âBut youâre thinking about it.â
âWellâ¦yeah.â
Patsy swore again.
âHow many years do you think itâs gonna take to make my house livable?â
âItâs almost there now. You have electricity and water.â
Which was part of the problem. The memories from last spring of how sheâd been given that gift. Of whoâd been responsible for the repairs. And why. If Patsy didnât want to talk about Shane, Zoe most definitely didnât want to broach the subject of what had happened to her brother. âI donât have appliances or furniture. I need new windows and probably a new roof. The house is little more than a shell.â
âSo youâre gonna sell your horse to pay for fixing up your house?â
âNo.â She said it too fast. And knew the rest of the equation had just added up for Patsy.
âYouâre gonna get rid of the farm and stay with Pete.â
âIâ¦donât know.â
