An enormous gray dragon, as long as a city bus and twice as tall, looked down at us, frozen in time and place like a snapshot. The monsterâs open mouth revealed multiple shark-like rows of razor sharp teeth. But the gray-green eyes were still familiar to me. My fatherâs eyes. Heâd taken the form of a Nordic Blue, one of the many dragons that he had studied over the years.
To say he looked impressive and terrifying was an understatement. The huge dragon, encapsulated in a block of ice, floated in the air a dozen feet above the ground via magic.
âWhat have you done to him?â I asked, putting my hand on the massive block of ice that imprisoned my father.
âItâs very simple.â The ice queen shrugged. âYour father shall remain in this block of ice until my gold has been returned to me.â
âButâ¦â I replied weakly. âYou know he doesnât have the gold.â
âThen Iâll leave it up to you to figure out who does and where it is.â The queen slowly strolled the perimeter of the ice block. âAnd you really must be more careful about what you say. Loose lips sink ships and all that.â
She was apparently referring to the fact that I had tipped her off to the fact that my father was being held at Blackthorn.
A blast of warmth hit my legs. Directly below the block of ice, an enormous fire-pit had been dug twenty feet deep into the ground. Despite its depth, the flames rose high enough to lick the sides at ground level. The heat from the fire had already caused the bottom of the block of ice to drip. The heat in the center was so intense that the droplets of water evaporated before they ever made it to the flames.
âIâve added a little extra incentive for you.â She smiled. âYou see, the ice is slowly melting over this handy little fire-pit of doom. When it completely melts, your father will fall into the flames and perish.â
I stifled a laugh. That made no sense.
âBut fire doesnât hurt dragons,â I replied. She knew that, of course. Dragons were born in fire. It was as harmless to them as the air they breathed.
She laughed. âVery true. Fire will do him no harm. Itâs the one hundred long spears, sharpened to a deadly fine point that will be the end of him.â
I leaned forward, peering into the pit and seeing nothing but rolling fire. I guess Iâd have to take her word for it.
She came back around to my side. With a wave of her hand, the flames died down just enough for me to see the tops of the knife-like blades.
I guess I didnât have to take her word for it.
âDo you believe now?â she asked as if sheâd been reading my thoughts.
âNever doubted you, your highness,â I said in a respectful tone.
âThen return to your realm and find me my gold.â Her icy fingers gripped my arm. As soon as she made contact with my skin, a zap of energy tore through me like a spark of electricity.
