Chapter 7

A Grimm Discovery

Warren inched in front of me, pushing me behind him. “So, destroying the book will what?” Warren asked. The question seemed to be a distraction.

“It will ensure that no one has the power to stop the Abyss from taking over Fable Wood. And then I will be free.” Leo rubbed his hands together.

“But, then, how did Gardenia kill my grandmother?”

“Oh ho ho ho. You’re stalling. I can see that now. Very clever.” He chuckled ominously. “It’s too bad you aren’t on my side. We would’ve made quite the team. But I suppose sacrificing you is a small price to pay for my freedom.”

“You can’t tell me how Gardenia killed my grandmother because it’s a lie.” Warren glanced back, locking eyes with me, and I saw the sorrow in them.

“I’m not lying,” Leo roared, his eyes shifting into those twin slits of glowing yellow. “Can’t you see, it’s all her fault? Everyone in Fable Wood who died in the last thousand years did so because of her family, which makes it her fault.”

“I see that this all started with you and your selfish need for someone who didn’t want you,” Warren growled. “End this, or I will end you.”

“Big words. I’m almost proud. But you can’t stop me, Warren Prince. No one can.” Leo paused like he had more to say.

I expected him to shift into his dragon form and continue as he ate us like french fries, but he didn’t say more. It might have been comical if the situation wasn’t so dire.

“So when those skeleton hands tried to get us, that was all a ruse?” Victor asked. It was a nonsensical question because, of course, that was the truth. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.

“That’s right, Victor. Using those smarts again, I see,” Leo snapped sarcastically.

“I can and will stop you,” Warren said.

As he spoke, his body grew until he was twice his regular size, a hulking frame of sinewy, well-defined muscle. He was stone come to life as his skin shifted from hairy and tanned to weathered gray, infused with a worn surface that bore the marks of time. His wings were expansive, so close up. Dark veins flowed through them, the same color as the sharp talons along the edges and the horns extending from his head.

I should’ve been terrified, but I wasn’t. Warren was power personified, and I found him to be incredible. I wanted to ask if he felt pain when he shifted, but the way he clenched his fists and the straining of the muscles in his body answered my question.

There was no fear in Leo’s eyes either. His pride for his descendant grew, and he clapped heartily. “Magnificent, child. You are a tribute to those who came before you. But you’re no match for me.” He eyed Warren shrewdly. “Nothing will keep me from getting out of this place. Noth⁠—”

Something struck Leo in the chest. A moment later, there came the sound of a missile flying through the air. Leo fell onto his back.
