Chapter 19

Spence

I watch my father’s nostrils flare with frustration as he tries to comprehend what I’ve just announced to him and my mother.

“So let me try and understand you, Spencer. We sent you to one of the most prestigious schools in London ….”

“Don’t forget the two-bedroom flat we bought him as an incentive to join the firm,” my mother eloquently adds.

“That was a graduation gift,” I mutter quietly.

“That was an incentive for you after Imperial College accepted your application.”

“No.” I look at my mother sternly. “Father and my tutors at Harrow applied on my behalf. I never applied there.”

Her nose crinkles and her mouth draws into a straight line. She is just as irritated as my father is, but I think it’s more to do with the fact that I’m the second son resigning their position to eventually take over my father’s position. Her frustration isn’t aimed directly at me, personally.

Since Christmas, I’ve avoided my parents' invitations to visit them at the Reading residence because I know they want to discuss my new appointment in the firm. I even skipped out on the annual family ski holiday in Chamonix because I’m dodging them like the plague.

I’m expected to start my position on the board of directors in July, the day after graduation. Except there’s only a number of months left, and they need to know I have no such intentions.

I’ve already applied to get certified for my landscape architect license in addition to the degree I will get in urban space design. I plan to start my own business hopefully by winter this year. It’s time to do the right thing, sit my parents down, no matter how much they will object, and let them know my plans. I’m firmly planting my feet in what I want for a career, and unfortunately, it won’t be what they’ve chosen for me.

Except I have already explained my plans, and either it’s not registering, or they refuse to accept it.

Both my parents are on the board of directors and play an active role in the family’s business ventures. From a young age, I knew what I didn’t want to do, and joining the family business was not something I desired. For as long as I can remember, I wore the stigma on my back as one of the heirs to Bisconfections, Britain's famous biscuit company.

When my brother finished his economics degree at Imperial, a college that both my father and grandfathers attended, he dutifully took his place at the firm, and I breathed a sigh of relief. His accepting his role as the future head meant I didn’t have to.

My excitement was short-lived when I was in the middle of studying for my A’levels in form sixth, and my brother announced he was resigning from the business to form another with a group of friends. Actually, they currently run a fairly successful diamond and precious metals company, so I can’t fault Digby for doing his own thing and being good at it.

But with him going off on his own, I became the next-in-line to inherit my father’s title in the business.
