CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Hailey helped her sister push back the reporters from Anika Keyes’ property, but they could not stop them from taking photos and video of everything. Elmer showed up a couple of minutes later to try to help, followed closely by half of the CSI team. The other half had called to say they had found the tire tracks Graham and told them about.

The CSI team headed to the trailer while Hailey stayed on the front lawn to keep order among the growing crowd showing up on the little state road. Neighbors had come out to mingle with the reporters and give interviews, and a few passing cars had also stopped. It was going to get out of hand before long.

Hailey saw a reporter toting a camera on his shoulder look at her car curiously. Only then did she notice one of her detainees peeking through the window.

Damn it!

She moved to cut off the reporter.

Too late.

“Hey! There’s three guys in the backseat of this car. Isn’t this the FBI car? Ma’am, are these your prisoners?”

The reporters swooped in like a swarm of locusts. Elmer ran, huffing after them, waving his arms over his head.

“These are detainees for an unrelated crime!” he shouted.

The reporters surrounded the vehicle, shining their camera lights in on the blinking, startled young men and barraging them with questions.

“These individuals have been arrested on suspicion of harassment and trespassing,” Hailey called out to the crowd. The cameras immediately swiveled to face her. “They were under detention when the second homicide occurred. They are not, I repeat not, suspects in the two homicides.”

“So there was a second homicide!”

“The resident of that trailer got killed?”

“Is the resident of that trailer the suspect?”

“Where’s the body?”

“Was it found in a crop circle like the last one?”

“So you were arresting three kids on some minor charge when the murder took place?”

That last question did what she and Alice and Elmer had all failed to accomplish—it shut the reporters up. They all looked at her expectantly, waiting for a reply.

Oh, crap.

"We had a report of suspicious activity, and fearing that the murderer might strike again, we responded to the call. I and my partner arrested these three men, but they are not connected to the killings in any way that we have yet determined."

“So they are suspects.”

“I didn’t say that. I—”

“Could they have been working with the killer, distracting you while he made a hit?”

“That’s unlikely. Serial killers tend to work alone or with a single partner.”

“So you can confirm there’s another serial killer on the loose in Pleasant?”

Double crap. Well, they had already decided that was the case anyway.

“The m.o. of both homicides is very similar.”

This admission was greeted with such a chorus of questions that Hailey couldn’t actually hear any of them.

Elmer cut in. “You are all interfering with an active investigation and blocking a state road. You all need to clear out immediately!”

Elmer was a husky man and could boom out a command like an Italian opera baritone when he needed to.
