In the 1680s William Penn arrived in Pennsylvania and Delaware and found that Native Americans were growing peaches. The climate and growing season were just right to make peaches become very plentiful throughout the state. In 1875, Delawareâs peak year of peach production, 8.7 millions of baskets of peaches made their way to market.
Poems and songs were written about Delawareâs sweet peaches. The peach blossom became the state flower in 1895 in honor of the peachâs importance to Delawareâs agriculture and economy.
P is also for Howard Pyle, a famous artist from Wilmington whose Book of Pirates offered visions of life on the high seas. Pyle is considered the Father of Illustration and also illustrated books such as The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood ,The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, and many more. He had many famous students, including the artist N.C. Wyeth.
The Spanish brought the peach to the New World, a very bountiful fruit tree.
The blooms became our state flower, so Peach blossom is our P.
