Chapter 21

From the notebook of Iris Engels: Idle Questions: personal- 34) I’ve heard a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human's, does that apply to part time human-dog-beasts?

It bit me! I elbowed the beast, and it disengaged its jaws. I looked down. Trails of blood flowed down my chest, and I could feel the warm fluid dripping down my back. The velvet tongue of the beast licked the blood off my back and up to the bite.

I jumped off the bed. “You, do not touch me,” I yelled at it and bolted out of the room and back into the bathroom, grabbing my phone on my way. My clothes were still in a pile on the floor. I pulled out Bart’s card and punched in the number.

He picked up after three rings, “Ah, Miss Iris, how may I be of service?”

“He bit me,” I said, my voice cracking. I stood in front of the bathroom sink and looked at the mirrored medicine cabinet. The bite looked bad. I grabbed one of the hand towels from the shelves and pressed it to the wound, trying to stop the bleeding.

“Who bit you?” Bart asked, genuinely confused.

“The beast,” I said, having a harder time keeping my voice level. “I came out of the bathroom after a shower and he bit me.”

“Where?”

“My bedroom.”

“No, where on you did he bite?” Bart asked. “Face? Legs? Stomach?”

“My shoulder,” I said. “What does it matter where? He bit me. I’m trapped in the bathroom. I think you need to send the tranq team or something.”

Bart started laughing on the other end of the line.

“This isn’t funny!” Now I was crying. “Oh god, it won’t stop bleeding. I can’t put enough pressure on it.”

“I’m sorry, dear,” Bart said sufficiently chastised. “The beast marked you, kid. Catherine tells me that the beast chose you as its mate. This is what some shifters do with their mates. I understand you are scared. You should have been warned about this.”

“Are you saying it’s normal to go around biting people?” I said coolly.

Bart laughed again. “Only for shifters, and only with their mates, and only if they want them to. My shifter buddies make it sound like it is the pinnacle of intimacy. The beast must be really comfortable with you.”

The shock of my wound was starting to wear off, and the dizziness of the blood loss was setting in. I started wobbling and sat down on the toilet.

“Iris, are you there?” Bart’s voice rang out from the phone. “Iris, stay with me, call Williams back in. Shifter saliva has a coagulant in it. That should stop the bleeding.”

I tried standing up, then I stumbled out of the bathroom and around the corner into the bedroom. The beast was sitting on the bed with its eyes wide and its tail between its legs. I started to stumble, and it jumped off the bed, walked behind me, and nudged me onto the bed.

“Bart . . . said . . .” I managed, “Stop the bleed .
