One reason trampolining qualifies as an extreme sport is that it can be very dangerous, especially when important safety precautions are ignored. Jumping up and down on a trampoline is fun, and so easy that practically anyone can do it. As a result, people have been slow to recognize the real risks of this activity. During the 1970s, thirty years after George Nissen patented his design for the modern trampoline, a series of lawsuits filed by people injured on trampolines forced the closure of operations at Nissen’s trampoline factory.
