Lea

I couldn’t sleep. I laid in my bed, tossing and turning. I should have been concerned and scared out of my mind. Instead, I was anxious, and not in an unpleasant way. I wanted to see him again, and I hated it.

In the morning, Leo and I researched the restaurant.

It was high-end, and exclusive. A place where everyone wore tuxes or gowns. Exactly the kind of place that kept the middle-class rabble like us away.

“You’ll have to buy a dress,” Leo said.

“No way. Where will I hide a gun?” I couldn’t wear a gown. If women couldn’t wear underwear in dresses because it caused lines, then there was no way I could hide a holster.

“You can carry a purse,” Leo said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

I looked at the women on the restaurant’s website. They were real patrons, enjoying real drinks. The kind so rich that they were all flawlessly beautiful. Some clearly had surgical help in that regard. I was out of my depth.

Maybe I should wear a dress. Not to impress Callum. No, that would be ridiculous. But to blend in.

I tried hundreds of dresses at the Outlet Mall. I eventually settled on a long-sleeved red gown that had pleats from my right shoulder, between my breasts, and diagonally to a slit at the top of my left thigh. Small pearls scattered below the bra line. It was wildly impractical, scratchy, and made of an un-breathable synthetic fabric. But it looked good, so it would work.

I purchased a black sequined clutch that fit a Walther PPK and added a pair of those knock off Louboutin shoes. They were the kind with red bottoms that all those rich people wore.

That evening, I put on red lipstick and slicked back my hair. I knew that this would be as good as it got for me.

Leo replaced one of the pearls under the bust line with a camera, and another with a microphone. The cables were taped to my torso that ran to a battery pack awkwardly taped near my inner thigh.

This was not something we did often. We weren’t private investigators. We were assassins. But the movies made this look easy, so… we’d give it a shot.

When I looked in the mirror, I hated what I saw. It didn’t look like me. I was playing dress up. I wasn’t this person, and I must have looked as awkward as I felt.

“I don’t like this,” I whispered.

Leo continued to strap a gun into his waistband.

“I’ll be in your ear the whole time.” He untucked my hair from behind my ear to cover the earpiece. “Nothing is going to happen. Nothing bad can happen. And if it does, I’ll be there.”

“So we can die together? I’d rather you just stay out of it if that’s the case.”

He didn’t react. He was down to business. My calculated, responsible brother.

Like always, we traveled separately. I took a taxi to the bar, and he followed five minutes later in the Audi.
