Marker for the hanging tree

Flores himself was arrested some days later; he was hanged on St. Valentine’s Day of 1857 at the site of what is now the towering headquarters of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

One continuing legend says that Flores buried some of his loot on the peak that now bears his name. Local kids still go up there occasionally to look for the (almost certainly mythical) treasure.
