Chapter 34
"I'm heading out. Take off early today. I know I've had you working some long hours," Marlisa said as she closed and locked her office door and left.
Taesa sat there for about two seconds before she realized she'd been given the rest of the day off. She shut down her computer, grabbed her phone and purse, and ran out the door. She locked up behind her, set the alarm, and found herself on the street with no real idea what to do. She stopped. She could be doing some research. On Marlisa.
She looked around before turning and heading back inside. Her fingers trembled as she inserted her key and shut off the alarm to the office. She set her things on her desk. The outer office had nothing but her desk, a cabinet that she knew contained coffee supplies and office supplies, and nothing else. Taesa gripped her keys and walked toward Marlisa's door. She stood staring at it for a full ten seconds before she could convince herself to open the door. No one was around. Just to make sure, she glanced over her shoulder. The room was empty. But there was a sound from the hallway beyond. Taesa spun away from the door and had just managed to step behind her desk when the outer office door opened.
"What are you still doing here?"
Taesa kept her head bowed, as she grabbed her purse and cell phone from where she'd set them on the desk. She waved her hand before she choked out with an off-key laugh, "Just finishing up a few things." She cleared her throat. "I thought you were gone for the day."
"I was. But remembered something. Go. Get out of here before I change my mind."
Taesa practically ran past Marlisa and didn't stop until she'd reached the sidewalk. She started walking. Her mind was too distracted to determine where she needed to go.
A text came in. The ding caused her to jerk spasmodically. Taking a deep breath, she pulled out her cell phone.
Are you free? Or still working?
Free. Want to do some research?
No. I'm at Stanley Park with Hannah. We're going for a walk.
Oh, okay. Later then.
Join us. Please.
Taesa discovered that she was already walking in that direction. Hannah might not be happy to see her.
Be there in fifteen to twenty.
Great. Meet by Lost Lagoon.
It took longer than she thought, but she soon stepped off the path that opened onto the pond. It was fairly large, but she decided she'd just follow the path around until she found them.
As she walked, she passed several people. Some smiled and said hi, others were in their own world. When she came around a bend, she saw a tall, older man holding a pair of binoculars. Not something out of the ordinary. There was a lot of wildlife and, if you wanted an up-close look, you brought binoculars.
When she glanced in the direction he was pointing the binoculars, she couldn't see anything of much interest, except Kal and Hannah. They were in his direct line of sight across the end of the pond.
