Group Cohesion

Group cohesion has been defined as “the resultant of all forces acting on the members to remain in the group” (Festinger 1950, p. 274) . In light of the importance of staying together as a unit in a hostile environment, our ancestors had to evolve mechanisms to preserve social cohesion. Furthermore, as human social networks increased in size and complexity over the course of human evolution, we would expect these bonding mechanisms to have become increasingly sophisticated. To maintain group cohesion would require specialized mechanisms to recognize oneself and others as belonging to the same group as well as mechanisms to feel emotionally connected with others in increasingly large groups (Kameda et al. in press) .
