Chapter 18

The next day, Dean was looking at a blueprint of the building with Brendan, and working out the best defense points and escape routes. He heard Silas laugh and glanced up, helplessly drawn to the sound.

Silas was sitting on the floor just outside the blanket fort with his back against the wall. On the floor next to him was an empty plate and a glass. Isaiah had given him some food and water. Dean kicked himself for not thinking of that simple thing, that most basic way he could have helped.

Silas was bouncing Cyrus on his knee and grinning like an idiot. Dean’s heart clenched in pain. It had been so long since he had seen Silas smile or heard his laugh.

Dean didn’t realize he had walked over until he was standing in front of Silas. Silas glanced up at him warily, but didn’t move. He swiftly turned his attention back to Cyrus, dismissing Dean by ignoring him.

Dean felt Zayne’s eyes on him from across the room where the mothman was talking to Jasper. It prickled his skin and raised the hairs on the back of his neck, but he would not back down yet. He wasn’t doing anything wrong.

“Did you sleep okay?” Dean asked Silas, for want of anything else to say. He needed to start a conversation somehow.

Silas didn’t look up at him. “I didn’t let Zayne egg me up, if that’s what you’re asking.”

It hadn’t been on Dean’s mind, but now Silas had planted the images there and he flinched in dismay. He needed a bottle of brain bleach, and something to extinguish his stupid flare of jealousy over something that hadn’t happened.

Silas chuckled darkly, keeping his eyes fixed on the baby.

“Did you want something?” Silas asked snidely, still without looking up.

Dean fidgeted anxiously for a moment before sighing in defeat. “Thank you for yesterday. For saving us.”

Finally Silas looked up at him, his dark eyes intense. “Good thing I wasn’t chained in the basement without my magic.”

Dean opened and closed his mouth several times. It was a fair point. If the Council had attacked when Silas had been bound, they’d have been screwed. Dean had endangered them all. But if he hadn’t and Silas had gone full dark side? It had been an impossible choice, one it seemed he would never stop paying for.

“It was only ever going to be temporary, I swear. Just until I could get a mage there to check what was wrong,” he pleaded.

Silas merely shook his head in disgust and turned his attention back to the baby. “Stop looming over me and sit down.”

Dean dropped to the floor so fast he hurt his ass. Silas caught his wince and laughed. “You are an idiot.”

“I know,” agreed Dean with a tentative grin.

Silas sobered suddenly and sighed heavily. He dropped his head to rest back against the wall as if he no longer had the strength to hold it up. He still looked so very tired, worn and thin. Dean wondered if
