CHAPTER 5
Making her way down the stairs to chair yet another press conference, Sara felt a headache brewing. Damn, why didnât I pop a couple of paracetamols before tackling the journos?
The second she laid eyes on her, Jane appeared concerned. âHey, you look rough. Everything okay? I thought it was strange when Carla got in touch with me earlier.â
âIâm fine. The start of a headache coming on, no big deal. Iâve just been cursing myself for not taking some tablets before coming down here. I donât suppose you have any on you, do you?â
Jane smiled. âYouâd be surprised what I carry in my handbag. Ta da!â Jane produced a foil packet of tablets and gestured for Sara to hold her hand out. She popped two out of the foil and into the palm of Saraâs hand, then dipped into the conference room and returned with a glass of water from the jug sheâd already set up in the room.
âItâs still filling up in there, so thereâs no rush if you want to delay it a minute or two. It might not be a bad idea and will allow the tablets to start working.â
âExcept now Iâll get even more stressed because youâve told me thereâs a roomful of journalists getting ready to pounce on me.â Sara pushed the pills down the back of her throat with her finger, making herself retch, and then washed them down with a large gulp of water.
âBlimey, I hope you donât need to take tablets that often if itâs that much torture for you?â
âIt is, but thankfully I donât need to rely on them that often. Bugger, I didnât make any notes for the occasion. Iâm going to have my back against the wall from the outset in there.â
âStop stressing. I recall youâve always managed it in the past, despite your reservations. Why should this time be any different? It wonât be, so try to chill. You should be used to holding one of these by now.â
âYouâd think so, wouldnât you? Not this time, though. Come on, shall we venture in there? Timeâs a wasting for the babes that are missing.â
Jane gave her a quick hug to reassure her and then led the way into the room and onto the slight stage that she had set up in readiness. Sara took her glass with her, sat at the table in front of the bulging crowd and topped up her glass from the half-filled jug beside her.
âHow are you holding up?â Jane leant in and whispered.
âLetâs get this over and done with. Iâm ready, if you are.â
Jane didnât think twice, didnât need to prepare herself. She turned to the journalists and said the relevant spiel which settled the room down. Sara was in awe of her confidence as usual. Ever the professional, able to turn it on with a click of her fingers. Sara couldnât help but feel a tad envious of her colleague as she spoke. Then Jane handed the conference over to Sara who felt anything but confident.
